Anualmente se ofrecen unos premios que se conocen como los Ig Nobel <\/a>que supuestamente se le conceden a investigadores que realizan estudios que "primero hacen reir y después hacen pensar". Pues a mí muchos de ellos lo que me dan es pena y lo que me hacen pensar es que hay investigadores perdiendo el tiempo e investigando para engordar sus vitaes. Incluyo una selección de mis "favoritos":

Daniel Simons<\/a> de University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/a> y Christopher Chabris<\/a> de Harvard University, por demostrar que cuando la gente le presta atención a algo pueden ignorar hasta a una mujer con disfraz de gorila. Referencia:"Gorillas in Our Midst<\/a>," Daniel J. Simons and Christopher F. Chabris, vol. 28, Perception<\/a>, 1999, pp, 1059-74. He logrado iluminarme con este gran descubrimiento. $\"\"$ \n<\/p>\n

Dr. Mara Sidoli<\/a> of Washington, DC, "Farting as a Defence Against Unspeakable Dread." [Publicado en "Journal of Analytical Psychology<\/a>," vol. 41, no. 2, 1996, pp. 165-78. Cita del abstracto: "When feeling endangered, Peter had developed a defensive olfactive container using his bodily smell and farts to envelop himself in a protective cloud of familiarity against the dread of falling apart, and to hold his personality together." Ya tiene una nueva estrategia para lidiar con la ansiedad. $\"\"$ \n<\/p>\n

Shigeru Watanabe<\/a>, Junko Sakamoto, and Masumi Wakita, of Keio University<\/a>, por adiestrar palomas que discriminan entre las pinturas de Picaso y las de Monet, "Pigeons’ Discrimination of Paintings by Monet and Picasso," "Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior," vol. 63, 1995, pp. 165-174. Ahora podemos utilizar las palomas para enseñarle esta destreza a nuestros estudiantes. $\"\"$ \n<\/p>\n

Steven Stack<\/a> de Wayne State University, y James Sundlach<\/a> de Auburn University, por su investigación "The Effect of Country Music on Suicide<\/a>." Y a pesar de que no me gusta la música country no creo que sea para tanto: "In this article, we explore the link between a particular form of
\npopular music (country music) and metropolitan suicide rates. We contend that the themes found in country music foster a suicidal mood among people already at risk of suicide and that it is thereby associated with a high suicide rate. The effect is buttressed by the country subculture and a link between this subculture and a racial status related to an increased suicide risk." Lo interesante es que en este caso solo puede hablarse de correlación y no de causa y efecto pero el título y el artículo dan a entender otra cosa. <\/p>\n
