Michael Welsch, antrop\u00f3logo de Kansas State University y creador del famoso video The Machine is Us\/ing Us<\/a>, tiene un proyecto muy interesante dirigido a realizar una etnograf\u00eda digital del fen\u00f3meno de Youtube<\/a>. En junio ofreci\u00f3 una charla en la Biblioteca del Congreso en donde presenta los primeros resultados de este proyecto. En la charla incluye segmentos de videos en donde los usuarios hablan sobre lo que la comunidad de Youtube significa para ellos. Para comenzar a entender el poder de esta tecnolog\u00eda Welsch propone dos conceptos: el concepto de James Joyce de \u201caesthetic arrest\u201d y \u201ccontext collapse\u201d. En relaci\u00f3n \u201caesthetic arrest\u201d Welsch nos dice<\/a>:<\/p>\n

To see \u201cbeing\u201d is to see the person beyond your typical judgment of that person. To see \u201cbeing\u201d is not to \u201csee\u201d but the empathic experience of recognizing shared being. The viewer achieves what James Joyce calls \u201cesthetic arrest,\u201d a state in which \u201cthe mind is arrested and raised above desire and loathing.\u201d In Joyce\u2019s beautiful words, it is \u201cthe luminous silent stasis of esthetic pleasure, a spiritual state very like to that cardiac condition which the Italian physiologist Luigi Galvani \u2026 called the enchantment of the heart.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The problem is not lack of context. It is context collapse: an infinite number of contexts collapsing upon one another into that single moment of recording. The images, actions, and words captured by the lens at any moment can be transported to anywhere on the planet and preserved (the performer must assume) for all time. The little glass lens becomes the gateway to a blackhole sucking all of time and space \u2013 virtually all possible contexts \u2013 in upon itself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
