El problema de spam en mi blog había estado aumentando de manera significativa. Necesitaba una solución sencilla y efectiva. Mediante la instalación del plugin AntiSpam Image he podido reducir el spam a cero. El plugin añade un código que los visitantes tienen que incluir para poder enviar sus comentarios. A pesar de que le añade una tarea adicional al proceso de enviar un comentario, representa para mi un gran beneficio ya que no tengo que invertir tiempo en el manejo de spam.

La verdad que a mi me gusta más el Akismet, es casi perfecto. Con esto temo que baje el volumen de comentarios.

Ese es un buen punto. Yo no he hecho el upgrade al WP 2.0 y por lo tanto no puedo usar el aKismet. Soy de los que actualizo cuando veo una necesidad mayor. He leído también que el aKismet le está dando problemas a algunas personas: aqui y aquí. .
Si bien en algún momento dudé de la efectividad de akismet, luego de actualizar wordpress (algo que recomiendo a quien no lo ha hecho, pues arregla algunos problemas de seguridad) y probarlo tengo que decir que es realmente efectivo… de hecho, desde ese entonces sólo había recibido spam a través de un formulario de contacto (el cual terminé por desactivar) y muy pocos han pasado.
Es cierto que un captcha disminuye la cantidad de spam, pero no es cierto que asegure su eliminación total, ya que de hecho existen spam-bots que logran pasar sin problemas los retos de distintos captcha.
¿Métodos infalibles? No existen, pero creo que el captcha no es la mejor forma si es que queremos incentivar el diálogo en nuestros weblogs, dándole más trabajo a los usuarios.
Mi recomendación: una combinación que me ha funcionado bastante bien: Akismet + Bad Behavior. Ambos son transparentes al usuario y (hasta donde yo sé) no han eliminado falsos positivos.

Gracias por las sugerencias. Mi experiencia con los métodos para controlar el spam es limitada. Y el Anti-Spam Image está haciendo un excelente trabajo hasta el momento. Con esa experiencia es que lo estoy recomendando. No hay duda que existen otros métodos más poderosos que probaré cuando tenga un tiempito.
En relación al asunto de la seguridad, actualizar no necesariamente es la forma más efectiva para aumentar la seguridad porque he notado que después de un tiempo siempre le encuentran un problema de seguridad a WP. Eso pasó hace poco con WP 2.0 . Así que podemos tener la versión más reciente y todavía tener problemas de seguridad.
